OnePlus Nord

OnePlus, yesterday, launched their much anticipated and much speculated about OnePlus Nord. Starting at a price of Rs. 24,999 here in Indian markets, it seems like OnePlus is all set to disrupt the market, much as it did 6 years ago with the OnePlus One.

Specs

Ah, specs. The first thing that comes to mind. The phone runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G (5G capable) processor, LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.1 storage in configurations of 6+64GB (Rs. 24,999), 8+128GB (Rs.27,999) and 12+256GB (Rs. 29,999). That’s right, 12 GIGABYTES of RAM, in a mid-range phone. Cameras? Plenty. On the back, we have a 48MP Sony IMX586 main shooter (ripped directly out of the OnePlus 8), plus an 8MP ultrawide, 2MP macro lens, and 5MP depth sensor. On the front, a 32MP IMX616 and 8MP ultrawide, in the form of a dual-camera pill shaped punch-hole thing, up on the top left of the screen. Still better than a notch. It has a 6.44-inch FHD+ AMOLED display, that runs buttery smooth at 90 Hz. Add OnePlus’s amazingly optimized Oxygen OS 10.5, a 4,115mAh battery with Warp Charge 30T, and that killer price: you’ve got that flagship killer OnePlus has always talked about.

First Impressions

With a glass-metal sandwich design, minimal bezels and what promises to be a smooth-as-flagship-but-with-mid-range-components software experience, this phone looks premium; it feels premium. OnePlus seems to be sticking to their branding, “pretty much everything you could ask for”. Would wireless charging be nice? Yes. Would a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 865 be nice? Yes. But at Rs. 24,999, you really can’t be bothered asking for more than this. OnePlus is making big moves in the mid-range segment, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Looking Nord

The name “Nord” means “North”. Evidently, OnePlus is looking North, to the future, as it plans to enter the mid-range market. This price bracket of about Rs. 20-30K is one of the most competitive segments of the Indian market. Notice how, in the worlds-first AR launch yesterday, they revealed the Indian price first? Yeah, they know their fans. And they know their competitors too. Nord is going to be up against the likes of the Vivo V17/V19, Oppo Reno 2/ 3 Pro, Realme X3, Samsung A51/A71, and Redmi K20/K20 Pro. Interestingly, Oppo, Vivo, Realme and OnePlus are all owned by BBK Electronics. Irrespective of that, competition is competition, and by the looks of it, OnePlus is the clear winner. I mean, it’s OnePlus. At Rs. 25K. Do you need to know anything else?

In Conclusion

All jokes aside, the OnePlus Nord seems to be a pretty great phone. Well priced, competitive, and with excellent features. It’ll be a few weeks till full reviews are out, with all the nit-picking they come with. But based off initial impressions, I think it’s safe to say that this phone is going to be amazing. All in all, if it fits within your price range, buy it. As a side note, the 6+64GB model will be available in September and only in one colour, Grey Onyx, whereas the others will be available in the first week of August, in Grey Onyx and Blue Marble. Pre orders start today, 22nd July, on Amazon and OnePlus’s website. OnePlus also launched their truly wireless earbuds, the OnePlus Buds. But we’ll talk about those in another post. Thanks for reading!
