Are Feminism and Gender Equality Different?

What is feminism? Feminism stands for the advocation of woman’s rights to bring about equality of the sexes. Although, this definition has been much tarnished to form an idea that benefits our beliefs. Sexism and the inherent difference between man and woman have been drilled into our beings since time unknown. We have grown up with the idea that man and woman are different and very well they are, but along the generations this distinction has been distorted to value men as superior.

Feminism has been around since the late 1800s and has since much progressed. Yet with the rise of autonomous being for women, there have been many set backs and retorts from the patriarchal society which benefits from female inferiority. The progress of Women as a part of humanity has been condemned for many generations and this disparity is visible in the way women are treated in work related fields or any other male dominated field.

One may say, why call it Feminsim? If the idea is to appeal to bring about equality for all humans irrespective of their gender, then shouldn’t it have a much more generalised name?

Well, maybe. But feminism focuses on women empowerment to bring women to a level where they are given the same incentives as men to achieve their goals and fulfil their ambitions. In a way, you can say that Feminism is in fact different from Gender Equality, if you go just by their literary meaning.

Feminism and Gender Equality are one and the same of you believe that both of them work to undo the years of repressions faced by women and even men. The two words synonymously support each other and are incomplete without each other. Gender Equality is the very basis of the idea of Feminism. Stating the two as different would leave both the terms incomplete.

Of course, in reality, the idea of feminism has been convoluted to justify harsh female behavior which supports the degrading of men. Feminism in no way justifies redundant mentality towards other genders. In fact, feminism like Gender Equality aims at enabling people to embrace themselves and their differences.
